YORK, Pa. — The University of Mary Washington combined seven CAC championships with six second-place finishes to snap Salisbury University’s reign and capture the 2012-13 Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award. It is UMW’s first championship since the 2004-05 year.

The Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award is named in honor of Richard “Dick” Cook, who was the first commissioner of the CAC and served the conference for 15 years before retiring in 2007.

Mary Washington captured the CAC trophy in men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s cross country, field hockey and women’s indoor track & field on the way to scoring 156.0 overall points. Salisbury also captured seven team championships, but ended the year with 155.5 points. To read more, click here.

Highlights of the year include:

1. We won CAC championships in field hockey, women’s cross country, men’s swimming, women’s swimming, women’s indoor track, men’s tennis, and women’s tennis.
2. The field hockey team finished 20-2 and advanced all the way to the NCAA Final Four in Geneva, NY.
3. Sophomore swimmer Alex Anderson won the NCAA National Championship in the 400 IM, setting a new national record in the process.
4. UMW captured the CAC All-Sports trophy for overall athletic excellence for the first time since 2006.
5. Offices in Goolrick were completely renovated.
6. The athletic training room was expanded and one additional full-time trainer was added.
7. A new student-athlete lounge was created in Goolrick.
8. The Goolrick weight room was transitioned to varsity use only and was completely renovated and upgraded.
9. Action photos of student-athletes were placed throughout the facility.
10. A corporate partner program was established with local businesses, with nine current partners.
11. The Eagle Club, a comprehensive booster organization, was established and an advisory board put in place.
12. We signed an exclusive, department-wide apparel and footwear deal with Nike.
13. Using internally reallocated funds, we created the full-time position of Athletics Development and Promotions Specialist, as well as four assistant coaching intern positions.
14. Mr. Darrell Green, one of the all-time great Washington Redskins and a member of the NFL Hall of Fame, joined our staff as Special Assistant for Student-Athlete Development and Public Relations.  Mr. Green will provide unique mentoring to student-athletes and staff and will assist in department fundraising efforts and alumni and community events.
15. We completed and presented a comprehensive strategic plan, “Soar Like an Eagle”.  This document includes approximately 70 recommendations and involved individuals from across campus in its development.  It includes the athletic department’s new goals and statement of mission and values.

After months of analysis and deliberation, it was determined that, effective May 2014, the men’s and women’s varsity rowing programs would be transitioned to “team” status, which is the same as the rugby program at UMW.  This difficult decision was reached due to concerns in the areas of student-athlete experience, safety, equipment, facilities, recruitment, and funding.  The athletic department will work closely with the rowing program over the next year to ensure as smooth a transition as possible.

Our student-athletes and staff were involved in hundreds of hours of community service activities, including several ongoing initiatives.  Serving as the “front porch” of our beautiful campus, we proudly represent UMW every time we step into the arena of competition.  We are always proud to say that we don’t play at Mary Washington, we play for Mary Washington.  We play for you.

The revised Draft of the University Master Plan is now available for review and comment on the UMW webpage http://president.umw.edu/masterplan/.

In 2011, the UMW Master Plan Steering Committee presented a Draft Campus Master Plan to the University Community for comment and feedback.  As many of you will recall, the Plan was the culmination of more than a year’s work conducting studies of buildings, landscape and infrastructure, researching trends in higher education, interviewing stakeholders, and analyzing data.  One of the most commonly voiced comments and concerns regarding the Plan had to do with proposals to consider razing several buildings.

In response to those comments, the University asked its nationally known Historic Preservation Department to develop a University-wide, comprehensive Preservation Plan as part of the Master Plan. The Preservation Plan is not complete at this time however an example of the approach being taken has been included  (Willard Hall). The entire Preservation Plan is estimated to be completed by September 2013.

The Master Plan is just that – a plan.  It is not etched in stone, will likely change in response to varying conditions and demands and most importantly, will be informed by the Preservation Plan.  All upgrades, repairs, renovations and construction impacting buildings or landscape features will look to the Preservation Plan before reaching the drawing board.  While the Plan contains renderings of several new buildings to replace current ones, if the Preservation Plan indicates the need for a historically correct renovation, that will be strongly considered.
